We have a 50cm cube tank that is currently home to 5 male guppies, 8 zebra danios and 6 corys. We also had a male Betta but had to move him to his own tank as he was attacking the guppies tails.

We are looking for ideas on what to add as a "feature fish". Something a bit bigger than what we already have to add a bit of interest. Also are there any species of Pleco that will be small enough to fit the tank?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

50 cm cube, thats 33 US gallons or 125 litres.

Dimensions of tank makes it more tricky to choose tank stocking than a regular rectangle tank.

Firstly, i think Zebra Danios require a larger or longer tank, at least 3 feet long :/

The only pleco i can think of that may be suitable for that tank size may be Pitbull Plecos, but unsure, hopefully someone can advise on that.

As for feature fish, how about honey gouramis or sparkling gouramis?

I second Honey Gouramis! They're really nice fish, I have one myself. Getting a trio of them would be a really cool addition to that tank

Thanks for the suggestions, I did discuss tank size with the shop when purchasing and nothing was mentioned about the Danios. I will look into the Gouramis next time I'm near the shop. The bulldog plec looks good if I can find one.......

Does anyone know if they would be well suited to my tank?

It is unfortunate that many stores do not properly train their staff so one has to be careful taking their suggestions when it comes to stocking.  A 50cm cube has the volume but not the horizontal length (50cm = 20 inches, which is a 10g tank length) and it is this length that active swimming fish like danios and barbs plus some others need.  As a suggestion, if you can return the danios for something else, this would be advantageous as stocking less active fish becomes easier.  The fast swimming of danios can be un-nerving to quieter fish such as would be suitable in a columnar tank.  Gourami for instance.

I personally would not consider a pleco for this tank; you want something out and about, and this is not the best choice as often one never sees them.

Byron.
