Hello all!
I've just joined this forum, but I've been keeping fish for the last 5 years or so (I used to have many bettas in small tanks... crazy fish lady). I only have space for small tanks right now, and I've been a bit uninspired about how to stock these tanks. I'm not entirely sure of what I really want yet, so I'm asking for suggestions, maybe some new ideas. This is what I have:
10 gallon tank:
Empty. I'm doing a fishless cycle, got a nitrite spike, I expect be done cycling next week or so.
15 gallon tank:
2 Corydoras schwartzi (the others died, and they've become shy - plan to add at least two more soon)
4 Corydoras Aeneus (2 of which are albino)
1 Betta splendens (new addition, still watching for signs of aggression towards the Cories)
I've had this tank going for about 4 years, it's well cycled (for this bioload).
Right now, my tap water indicates:
GH: 7-14 / KH: 6 / PH: 7.5
I was recently told that Cories don't do very well in small tanks and in groups smaller than 6 individuals... so now I'm a bit worried that they're unhappy. Nobody ever recommended dwarf species to me, which is too bad, really. My Cories *seem* happy, they're generally active, they're not stunted (2-2.5") and I've had them between 1 and 4 years. Would anyone have an opinion on this? Would it be kinder to give them away? I doubt that I'd be able to get a larger tank in the near future...
I was planning to move the Betta and 4 Cories to the 10 gal tank. Too full? Problematic for the Cories?
That leaves me with a 15 gallon with 4 cories in it... what else could I add? I'd like some colorful and active fish that live in the middle/top layers of the tank. I'd rather prefer to avoid livebearers because of the fry (unless I can do all male platies - I don't find all male guppies to work).
The other possible config would be to keep all Cories and the Betta in the 15g, and I'm left with an empty 10g that I can start stocking once it's cycled. In that case, any suggestions?
