ok since you keep posting lots of diy questions ill tell you how to do it entirely without any confusing diagrams or similar
1) boil the kettle, leave to cool for about the ammount of time it takes to make and drink a cup of tea
2)get a funnel and add the 2 cups of sugar to your 2 litre bottle
3) add the water from the kettle use about a litre then add about 700ml of cold but the lid on shake till it looks like all the sugars gone
4)set aside, remove the bottle cap and drill a hole the same size as the airline connector put a blob of silicon on the inside and outside to seal the connetion around the airline connector and the airline (egnore the drilling part of this if you have it already done)
5)set aside to dry overnight (this is the key point it allows the water to cool any sugar to dissolve and the silicon to set)
6)24 hours should have ellapsed by now, add the yeast half a teaspoon will be perfectly ample attach the lid to the botle and screw tightly shut
7) add a diffuser to the end of your airline and drop in the tank after anything from 10mins to an hour later you should see bubbles dont worry if you dont it can take up to 24 hours

hope thats helpful
all the best gareth

just rember not to ad yeast to water over 85ºF it will kill itoh and also never shake the bottle it will cause the co2 to leave.

yay my co2 is working it is producing bubbles into my bubble counter and then it is putting the gas into the aquarium via my power head

magic isnt it, i read somewhere the mix thats left over is known as "prison wine" its deadly apparently, somwhere in the same strength range as vodka

thanks garuf just one last question i have it through my power head so eacjh time it releases the gas into my aquarium will a heap of bubble come out and also is 14 per minute any good that is using my bubble counter

i personaly hate bubble counters since theyre only realy usefull on pressurised co2 setups. 14 bubbles seems ok, it will get faster though before getting slower as the yeast dies because the contents of the bottle have become too acidic, mine gives about a bubble a second, its more or less a constant stream from my airstone, and yes everytime it goes through the power head youll get a spray of bubbles, according to tom barr plants prefer a mist of bubbles across their leaves to stimulate good growth but in my tank i seem to have good growth and pearling with just an airstone to diffuse it (co2) into the water. so i dont suppose it realy matters if you dislike the powerhead method dont be scared to experiment until you find a method you like, and try not to worry about being 100% right with everything since theres more than one way to do things yet they all the the same result, better plant growth.

kool thanks for all the help im on my way to having a nice lush tank
any time :good: i wish you all the best, forums are amazing for gaining knowledge. i was going to cycle my tank with a guppy now i know better! also id never have thought of using aquasoil and just hoped for the best using gravel same goes for CO2 and ferts, when i started fish keeping when i was a child before the big break i thought co2 was the enemy and all my books aggreed and tried everythign to out gas it and always wondered why i had dead plants!
what i need now is someone to pop up and tell me how the hell i get rid of thread algae and ill be a happy chappy

CAE
chinese algae eater will eat it i think
there is absolutely no way in hell i am putting one of those in my tank, horrible horrible fish, ugly to look at and suck the scales of other fish, agressive too!
i was thinking more of a treatment for the cause apposed to a cure for the symptoms. i tried cutting back on ferts but it seems to have made no diffrence
apologies for thread-jacking

You will get rid of the thread algae by manually removing it and then ditching the yeast setup for a more consistent pressurised setup. After a week or 2 or consistent 30ppm (which you will struggle to consistently keep with yeast) the thread algae and other kinds of algae will diminish and your plants will take off like never before.

The bubble counter is quite useful also in yeast setups because it allows you to see your bubble count. The airstone will not be giving you this as 3 or 4 CO2 bubbles may be needed to produce 1 bubble out of the airstone. It also traps the gunk that otherwise builds around the diffusor from yeast setups.

I think the last poster meant SAE - Siamese Algae Eater which is known to eat thread algae as are shrimp.

If I were putting hot water into a DIY setup I would put the cold water in first and then the warm water second.
