Hello,

I've had a new 34L tank set up now for about 2 months.
I set the tank up using a bit of water from another tank i haves and a spare filter i had which had been used before (as well as keeping the new one running).
After 3 weeks i added a betta and a few aquatic plants to the tank, then a week later i added 4 neon tetras and then later that week 3 dwarf neon rainbowfish.
They all seemed perfectly fine until about a week ago. I came home one day to find the betta dead at the bottom of the tank, i examined it to see if it had been bitten by the other fish or looked diseased but it looked perfectly healthy.
A few days later one of the rainbowfish suddenly died (again it wasnt diseased and had been perfectly healthy up until then), and then i came home one night to find another one dead.
Ive tested the water nearly every day with an all in one kit and it tests perfect for everything except the water hardness is a bit high - could this be killing them? I assumed it wasnt this as ive got another small tank which i use the same water in and the fish in there are fine.
If it was just because its a new tank i thought its usually the nitrates or ammonia that kill the fish but they both test fine.
Or could it be something to do with the plants? I wondered if they were somehow poisoning the fish or maybe the plant food that i used.

What tests did you do on your tank? are you using test strips or liquid tester?

What did your test show for ammonia & nitrite?
