Hi all, I came home from work at noon and as usual I dosed 5ml of easycarbo and ferts and at 2 pm I fed the fish and they were all fine. I left to go back to work at 3.30pm returning at 7pm to find one of the Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish girls dead at the bottom of the tank. She was white and her mouth was wide open. The snails had just found her, there were 3 on her eyes but they were intact so she hadn't been gone too long. None of the fish have been displaying any symptoms of any kind other than a spot of finrot on a different girl when I bought them 2 months ago which was sucessfully treated.

Tank size: 240l
pH: 7.5
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 10
Hard water
tank temp: 25C

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 40-50% weekly, but I did miss this Sunday, intending to do it Monday until our school got the phonecall from the inspectors so it was all hand on deck working overtime.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:
Dosing the same ferts that I've been dosing for a couple of years, EI levels

Tank inhabitants:
Now 7 Neon Rainbows, 1 Angel, 2 Bristlenoses, 4 red eye tetra, 1 clown plec, 3 panda and 3 peppered cory

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):
None since the beginning of October when the Rainbows went in.

Exposure to chemicals:
None other than the ferts and easycarbo which they've had since day 1.

Any ideas?

It's really hard to say without any symtoms to go on I'm afraid.
Water stats are good so I dosn';t sound like a bad water quality problem.

Just keep an eye on all the fish.
Maybe preform a water change for a few days.

Sorry can't be more helpful.

R.I.P.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I new it was a long shot as to what had killed her. The only thing I could think of was maybe she had been too close to the easycarbo when I added it as I know it can have adverse effects if they are hit with it before it's diluted. Perhaps I'll dilute it a bit more before adding it next time,
thanks again

I had an unexplained rainbow death a few weeks ago. I wasn't in but the missus says she heard a splash and a thud and then the rainbow sank to the bottom and died. I can only assume it jumped for whatever reason and knocked itself out on the lid of the tank.

New used ferts so don't know much about it.
Just check you are doing it right in the plant section of the forum.

Sorry for your loss.

They do jump occasionally and the braces are very close to the water surface so that's a possibility, I just hate not knowing why!
