tank 20 gal, planted, fluval filter, tank mates WERE 1 large gourami(F) 4 mature SAE"S, 5 mature Blackskirts 4 N Corica, 3 guppies, one female betta.
! loach died. Had never done well. removed from tank several hours before death.
Next 1 Sae died. I thought gourami had killed him .He was stuck in the loaches tubing with sides abraded.
Moved a male gourami over into tank. seemed to be accepted by female gourami. then i found him dead. (He had been a new addition to another tank but beat up his female. there I moved him into the 20 gal.)
Both his sides were badly reddened. looked to be an internal redness covering most of his sides. ?bad bruising?
Got rid of the female gourami as she then started to attack the SAE's.Tehn she went after the tetras.
So everything should be OK? Wrong. Found my biggest SAE dead on a leaf. Red internal look and red around anus.
In meantime since I was convinced that the gourami had killed the others. I added 4 danios. 2died within days.
1 was completley eatn possibly by the betta who now looked ill and off color.
All fish had seemed healthy at night and had been eating. Fish were ill in the mornings except one danio who ate breakfast and was dead by 4 pm.
Have treated tank with erythromycin and medicated antiparasitic food as per info on packages. No deaths during this time and all fish looked great.
Last night did final 25% water change. Today added carbon to filter. All fish were eating regular food and looked great. By 1 pm all fish breathing heavily. F Guppies head down, SAE's head up, danios and male guppy at surface.
Carbon was washed in tap water, so did chloramines trigger problem? Did carbon trigger problem?
Did regular food trigger problem?
reg. food has been used exclusively on this tank and is about 6 months old.(Marineland pellet)
Carbon has been sitting around for 3 years. We have not painted or used any sprays in the house as I have allergies.
My tank maintenance is done every 2 weeks for at least 4 gallons water and when I rinse the fluval it is 5 gal. Ammonia, nitritesare 0, nitrate runs somewhere between 10-15 as close as i can read the testcard.
Tank is planted with jungle vals, anubias, java ferns and has run for 4 years. This is the first time I have had fish deaths other than old age. The male gourami had a good appetite and a bit of stringy white poo.
Added extra air to tank and added Prime in case of chloramine contamination. I am unableto get the carbon out of the fluval as i cannot manage the darn thing. Husband is at work and I cannot ask him to come home to take out the carbon. Any other suggestions. Fish are a bit better now. Another water change?
