Hi - well on Saturday i was asking for help with 32 Platty babies, got fab advice. Only Problem is they have all disappeared apart from 1 !!!! The babies were born in a floating birthing tank after mother had given birth I put her back in the main tank with rest of fish & babies were happy. Last nite I went to bed they were all there fine...... until I got up this morning & only 2 were left !!!! :dunno: Gone all of them..... :/ Just disappeared....... Got home from work tonite and only 1 left I dunno where they went, they cant get out of the birthing tank & as far as I no nothing can get in...... to my sadness my last little 1 has just disappeared aswell. A friend has just told me they can jump?????? can they???? at 4 days old....... Im gutted totally ive gone & bought a new tank to house them & everything, new filter & heater for when they got biger.... im sad but need help WHAT HAPPENED :dunno: :(

I misread that. You had them in one of those little plastic floating breeding traps then?

Sorry that's awful sometimes the other tank occupants can jump in there and have a snack.

Sorry i thought you meant one of those breeder nets things that hang in the tank.

No its not a net, its like a plastic box thing that floats in the tank with the rest of the fish. there is a good 2 inches above the water level. If 1 of the other fish got in I cant understand why it didnt eat them all or how it even got in & out without me noticing.......

You will be surprised how they can get in and out, crafty when it comes to a fishy meal.

Awww that's sad. I have to be honest I have one of those little plastic things too but I don't use it for fry(I last used it for a fish suffering shock after getting stuck on the filter). I find they are more likely to live if they're hiding, but I have very determined tetras unfortunately. :grr: I really need a fry tank.
Hugs,
P.

Well I defo have a new tank now so im hoping another 1 will get up the duff & I can use it... I feel terrible the poor mum died the next day. I only put her in the birthing tank as she looked so distressed I thought she was being bullied I didnt even know she was pregnant, it was a total fluke she was in there to start with

:( Awww poor thing. Sounds like she was overstressed by it all. Could be there was birthing trouble.
One of mine gave birth just a week after coming home. She's fine and highly active but all the fry got eaten by my tetras. :grr:
She is my only female. Turned out my other platty is male. So I suspect more fry in the future is inevitable.
I'd lay money on your others having fry. Platties seem to spend their entire life preggers.
Hugs,
P.

I seperated my male platies from the female ones at one point because i was getting so many babies, they just never stop breeding and the more they breed the more babies they have in one lot! Trust me, if you have another female in there you'll soon have more fry.

mine have just had a load more in the last week and they are ruffing it out in the main tank with the rest of the fish. (i counted them at about 3 days and lost count at around 40) a few other females are preggers at the mo too.

my signature isn't up to date. ill update it after i post this but this is the fish in there with them:

5 neon tetras
2 male platies
5 female platies
2 plecos
1 betta
and lots of baby platies

there look to be less fry than before but i am confident a lot will survive. just make sure there are males and females (pref more females than males or they can get stressed by the males) and you'll have surviving babies in no time!
