Can a low wpg (1.5 or less) tank be sucessful without CO2 and fert? (Small tank)

If so, how, and what plants are advisable for a low wpg tank with no CO2 and fert. Thanks!

If you mean a 10 gallon tank with an 18 watt flourescent bulb I've got just the thing. It doesn't do too well. Even the java moss is beginning to brown. :/ But the hornwort is doing great and grows better in there than it does in my other tank. I have it floating. Java fern does OK, too. Also anubias. At one point I put some other plants in there temporarily before transfering them to another tank, and they didn't do so well. They included moneywort, corkscrew val, giant hairgrass (man, that was really bad), and wisteria.

HTH.

So, I should have a non planted tank? Thats sad, i really wanted plants, dont like those tacky plastic plants :\

My java fern has done fine with no light.

It doesn't mean you can't have real plants, it means you are severly limited. Maybe you can get some nice driftwood to create interest, and then do something with java fern, anubias, and hornwort. Those three will probably do fine. Thats what I am doing. I just found a nicer piece of driftwood last week. I think the one I had might have been rotting. I could not get rid of the rank smell :/ Maybe once we both get setup better, we can trade pics. I'd like to see how yours turns out if you go ahead and stick with the low light without CO2

Good idea. Thanks :)

I have a nice piece of bogwood, i will probably plant with java ferns.

I have some amazon swords growing ok in my 20g and thats at !WPG and no CO2 or ferts, but there are root tabs in the gravel below the swords so that'll help.

whats !WPG?

And whats a root tab? Sorry, im a newbie ;)

Is hornwort a tropical plant? My lfs keeps them in the ponds and say it wont do well in a tropical tank.

Would cabomba work?

I think !WPG = 1WPG, look at your keyboard. :D

hornwart works fine in a tank.

tobe honest, CO2 is not really essential if lighting in low.

Root tab = fertiliser that you put into the gravel for the plant.

I love CO2 and dosing fert, plant growth explodes and it's pretty amazing when everything's pearling. It's like they're boiling..... hangon, maybe they are :hyper:

i plan on a planted tank in the future. but i dont have enough time to maintain a planted dosed and CO2'd tank right now.

I dont have gravel fertalizer, I just want some plants which you can throw in with about 1.5wpg lighting.

Has anyone tried an all Java fern tank?

 cheers ;)

If I remember right Jimboo's small tank has lots of java ferns in it. Personally I think you could make some great scapes with just java fern. When I finally get round to redoing my main tank that'll be almost exclusively anubias on a massive piece of bogwood. You just cant expect huge amounts of growth with 1.5WPG but its still possible :)
