Subtrate Advice Please!

Hey guys, some of you will probably have noticed my posts about a newt tank im building. Id just like some advice for the subtrate for the planted section. First off, what to use? I have 4" available to build with, but i need about 1" on the top layer for large gravel, to stop the newts doing something silly involving swallowing stones/dirt.

Also, can anyone reccommend a good fertiliser? The water for the plants wont be accessable by the newts at all, as it is sealed off from the pool they have.

Could you elaborate a bit ...

The whole water being sealed off from the newts water etc

Draw up a doodle on paint or something (Make it easy for me IM TIRED Lol)

Waayyy ahead of you its basically an acrylic devider im building, so the newts get nice, clean, fesh water, and the plants water i can add as much fertiliser as i like and not have to worry about it affecting the newts

Also keeps the subtrate from sliding into my newt pool and mucking up all my aquascaping!

Ok so...

The orange bit (substrate) is gonna be planted, and the newts cannot get to it ?

and the blue bit is gonna be where the newts can swim

Im sooo confused mate haha!

Only way illl ever understand it is probs when i see a pic haha!
