so im getting a 29 gallon tank here in the next couple weeks and was wondering about substrates. i was looking at getting tropical sand for the tank, would this stuff be way to hard to keep clean or is it actually eaiser than your typical rocky bottom. please help me in making a decision. also i was thinking if i do go for the typical solution then would a black or natural looking bottom be best?

thanks to all who help

sand is a bit trickier to keep clean than gravel, but once you get the hang of it there shouldn't be too many problems. your fish (depending on what type) might play more in the sand than gravel. i think natural and black substrates are both nice, so it's your decision there. :)

Black or normall sand i say easier to keep clean IMO as you can see when its getting dirty I thins black sand and a black background looks soo efective.

I did have gravel, but found it a big pain to maintain. I changed to sand and my Corys love it! :D They are forever shovelling around in it, helping to keep it aereated! Wish I'd done it 1st time round, I haven't had any cases of white spot, bacterial infection or dropsy since I changed!
