Substrate

Ok well im looking for some substrate for my tank which will blend in with the plan! The plan is to create a natural looking river look with wood rocks and real plants so the substrate will have to be suitable for plants giving them the best chance possible?

Can anyone recommend a good natural looking substrate or substrates if you layer them. (One layer for plants topped with a layer of sand etc) And i intend to get corys so gravel will be out i feel.

Play sand gets my vote, B & Q play sand is darker and looks more natural than argos play sand.

I shall check the b and Q website is this ok for live plants? Will it compact and effect the roots?
