Substrate?

I am planning a brackish water set up and would also like to have plants in it. I want to have sand as a substrate but how will this work with plants? I've seen on the internet different substrates just for plants and also different types of sand. I'm more than likely going to end up with some sort of goby so I would need a fine sand. Is straight sand ok for plants? or do I need to mix/add something?

Sand is fine.
Plants dont need a nutrient substrate but it helps us out if we forget to dose the water with ferts or if we dont dose enough.
Plenty of successful tanks have an inert substrate
