i use small sized white gravel, i had white sand b4 that but found it to much hard work. only problem is the dirt shows up easy, but it looks amazing with drift wood when clean ( my opinion )

at the moment im using sand but im sick of it being so much work to keep looking clean so im going to change to fine gravel soon .

Am I the only person who doesn't mind if sand looks a little grubby round the edges between water changes?

Mind you, my idea of dirty might be different to others, as I have a lot of clown loaches, 3 big plecs, and geophagus too - all work together to make sure the muck is in nice little piles around the edges and plants for when I do a clean

I'd check on your stocking before switching to anything as coarse as slate fragments - I know I couldn't have anything but sand with my geos, ditto with my loaches too really as it could cause them a lot of damage!
