I'm setting up a mawali tank for the 1st time and i'm looking for peoples personal opinions on what substrate is best for them. I want something to keep the fish happy, i've read the finer the better. It would be an advantage if it buffers the water but not essential. what do you guys use and how do u rate it.

Thanks

I have used many substrates and as long as its not big the fish won't care. I have never used crushed coral as a substrate but i do use it as a filter medium to buffer my tanks. Its really up to you , some like natural looking gravel , some like sand , and some like the colored stuff.

I have used gravel, play sand, crushed coral, and now aragonite sand. I prefer sand, and really recommend the aragonite sand for the buffering capacity, and they fish enjoy moving it around the tank.
