Hi i am setting up a new tank and it will be filled with play sand what is the best substrate to add with it to enable palnts to grow -_-

layerite is the best but overpriced IMO
I have used fullers earth(petex cat litter) topped with sand
and the plants seem to love it.

I did confirm with petex that their cat litter was 100% natural and nothing added which it is. you must make sure the cat litter is safe, some have oudour absorbers etc added.

sounds good hope it was not to absorbant otherwise the fish would have nowere to swin (sorry bad joke) :-( would you still use root tabs

when I added the fullers earth I did add root tabs to the plants, just to give them a boost.
Another tip on re-planting is trim the roots(not too much), as this will promote growth.
