Hello,

I'm setting up a new tank and I'm using Tahitian Moon black sand. I've heard that this sand is so fine that live plants have trouble getting oxygen. Do I need to add any kind of substrate below the sand for the plants to grow properly and if so what substrate would you reccommend?

Thanks

I added a decent sized stone substrate underneath my sand for two reasons:

1) Sand round here seems to cost far more than normal substrate stone, so I added a good thick layer of normal stone on the bottom and covered with a thin layer of sand this gave it the look of depth without the stupid prices for sand making that depth blah blah,

2) I was also told to add a decent sized stone substrate so that live plants would be able to oygen easier and so that they would have something to hook on to.

It also seems to hold the sand down better on more of a stable ground, but of course it does help to get stones that share the same colour as the sand.
