Currently I have a profile type substrate in my 120 gallon planted tank. I am considering turning the planted tank into a cichlid tank, Oscars, Jags or Dempseys. I dont like the substrate I currently have and want to change over to sand. Is sand a suitable type of substrate for large cichlids like the ones mentioned above?

Thanks for any replies in advance.

As regards to, is it ok for them, sure no problems, as to whether you would want to keep those large cichlids with sand is another question. They are extremely messy fish, so you would be constantly cleaning the sand, they spit food out everywhere and poop in large quantities. Its a personal choice, but I wouldnt recommend it.

Thanks for the reply minxfishy. I think I'll stick with the profile, not because of the poops stuck on the surface but rather because of the pain in the a$$ it's going to be to take out the old stuff.
