Hi all. I am in the process of changing my substrate over from gravel to sand. I am wanting to get some plant growth in my aquarium so looking into a layer of fertilizer substrate under the sand. Can anyone tell me is this ok under sand? Also, does the fertilizer layer ever need changing as I am guessing it will only have a limited lifespan? Thanks

yes that is completely fine :) i have a layer of dirt/aquatic soil and then a layer of sand on top, the plants love it! as for the lifespan im not too sure about that one, sorry :)

Most clay based soils and substrates are very porous so will allow any excess nutrients to be soaked up keeping rich for your plants, only thing with sand is it doesn't allow as much water flow as other substrates so should be ok as it comes nutrient rich but might take time for any excess nutrients to filter down to the clay.
