Substrate Q

Does anyone ever use aquatic pond soil in their aquarium and if so what kind of results do you get with plants and do you add some gravel or sand over the top somehow?? I've always had gravel and I want to try something a bit different to give me the best chance of success with plants for my new tank.

It should work in theory though
