this is what i heard

that you can just dig up some dirt and put it in your tank as substrate

is it possible?

cuz it could save me lotz of money

i dont think it is cuz then nobody would be buying aquarium substrate

I think you can but I wouldn't as you dont know what else you're adding, could be all sorts of chemicals like weed killers. Then there are the live things you might add like bacteria, nematodes, and others. All just a bit to risky, well for me anyway. Laterite is a cheap option if you need one? Obviously not as good but does still work.
