Substrate For Cories

was thinking of maybe getting sand.. my relative's cory was digging at his sand and was wondering if sand was necessary and why was it if it were :look:
 
It's better to have sand with cories, as they can dig around in it more easily and it's more gentle on their barbels. It's not absolutely necessary though, just something they prefer.
 
or very smooth gravel (i have mine with gravel, but its smoothed so it won't hurt their barbels)
 
Either sand or a fine rounded gravel will be fine :)
