Hey Guys im Doing my 55 gallon tank with sand sub, its a freshwater, and i have herd that play sand, cheap and if thoroughly rinsed can make a good sub, any ideas on that?

i have heard it works fantastic as a substrate, never tried it myself, but considering it in the future for my tanks as well as my pond. seems like a good, less expensive substrate.

i use play sand in most of my tanks; wonderful stuff. It's only the washing it that's a PITA!

I thought it was great at first, but have had to cap it with a bag of more expesive LFS stuff as my powerheads blow it around otherwise, its a very fine and light grain.

If your not going to have powerhead, and have something in the tank that will turn it over (Corys, snails, etc) then its perfect. and CHEAP.

Mowbz, if your powerhead is blowing your sand around, what the heck is it doing to your fish??

I will never, ever have gravel again, and I'm too poor to pay LFS prices for sand, so play sand it is. Good stuff.

Nothing, it seems! The Kribs dont go near the top of the tank, and the Barbs swim up to it like its not even on! Its a 3000lph, a few inches under the surface on the pickup side, aimed slightly downwards to blow dirt back round to the filter pickup. Seems to make a right mess of the sand :(
