Subsrate Change

I am getting ready to start planting my tank. I would like to change the substrate from the electric blue gravel my wife bought for my son to a more natural looking sand/gravel mixture.

Would it be suggested, or a good idea to let the new substrate "season" so to speak for a couple of weeks before planting?
Or,
Can it be planted right away?

My suggestion is don't mix the sand and gravel. The sand will fall through the gravel ultimately just making firm gravel and it'll be hard to remove then.

Also rinse the sand REALLY well.
