Here's a couple pictures of one of my favorite fish, the stugeon catfish (Platystomatichthys sturio). Enjoy and comments appreciated! :)

Look at that bony structure in the head... very cool.

Do it! Do it! Do it! It's an awesome fish and a really good choice for people who like the shovelnose cats, but can't house the monsters. :good:

Do all sturgeon catfish have the upturned lip? Theres some pictures on planet catfish that show a 'normal' lip.

Thats not quite true, you still need a pretty big tank to keep these in as adults as their barbels get to be twice their own body length, with an adult size of around 18" you are looking at needing a tank that is at least 30" wide from front to back and 8 feet long. They also do better in a group than as solitary individuals.

Very nice fish though and not as likely to start eating tankmates during the night as other shovelnose type cats.

The upturned lip is only seen in captive specimins and is most likely cause from being kept in small holding tanks at the distribution centers :(

well, thats killed that. Atleast you no now.
 He's just stating the truth. I didn't even think about the whiskers when I told cheesy_feet to get this cat. I know sooner or later I will have to upgrade my tank for this fish and maybe add more. If it happens sooner, rather than later, my boyfriend has a 24" wide tank that should, hopefully, keep him happy until a larger tank is found.

For now, though, he is very happy. When I first got him, he was freaking out, because he would get tangled in the large swords and whatnot I had planted in the substrate and I got rid of them all to make this cat happy. On the plus side, the tank looks nicer.

Ahh, well I was thinking for my 270 gal anyway, so hopefully a trio or so would be good in there?
Is there any chance fo getting them without squished snouts?

invaderwithkey i think you have some of the best fishes in this forum
Thanks!

Hes looking good! Has he grown since the last pics you posted of him?
Id sware he has...
I think he has as well... It really shows when he is swimming up the side of the tank and you see him from the underside. I don't know why. Also, his whiskers have grown a lot since I got them (I guess they were damaged from transport.)

To be honest, this sturgeon cat is the only one I've ever seen for sale, so I don't know if you could ever get one without the bent nose. From what I know, though, they are usually damaged during importation, so you'll be lucky if you find one without the bent nose. :/
