I thought this would be alot easier but so far not a single pet shop i went to has it. One place has been around for 20 years and is family owned so I get a lot of things through them since they're priced right, but also carry high end supplies, foods etc etc. But they dont have any, petco and petsmart didnt either. Theres a place that might have it, but they're a solid 1 hour drive from where I am.

Anybody know anyone in Chicagoland that I can buy some from? I know this isnt really a US forum but I thought i'd give it a shot, otherwise anyone wanna sell me a few clumps? i want to establish some in my large community tank, but i really want some for my betta tanks as well.

I've slowly replaced silk plants with real ones in my aquariums, I currently have plants in both my betta tanks and the fish seem to love them but they're more "plant" like and so the boys will find a couple of bunched leafs to lay on, or wiggle through them like swimming through a forrest. I made small plant pots for the betta tanks since i dont keep gravel in them, it actually looks pretty cool. I took some established gravel from my large tank and planted a different plant in each pot, then placed the planted pot, one in each betta tank. They both got different plants so i can see if one is preferred to the other. As for my community tank, I lucked out today. I went to my local pet shop, the one that i said was family owned, and was approached by the most pretty young/petite 20 something with dark hair and big blue eyes. I started asking questions about the plants and told her what i wanted to do. She ended up giving me two handfuls of bundles and gave me different plants as well, filled up this big bag full of plants for me and then just charged me 5 bucks =) So cute AND friendly

So the extra plants went into my community tank. I found that my community fish love the plants as well. I have a black ghost knife that came out of his castle and went and swam in and out of the plants, going back and forth like he was rubbing the plants with his face and side of his body.

I know most people dont get direct sunlight on their tanks but all 3 of my aquariums are in direct sunlight all the morning hours *east/southeast facing windows" so theres a lot of light and supposedly these are low light plants as it is so they should be fine according to the girl at the store. She did bat her eye lashes at me so I was sold right there anyways

But I heard that java moss is pretty much indestructible, so i figured maybe someone would sell me some, at least coming from this forum i know its alive and will prob get to me alive lol.

Anyways if not, does anyone know a chicagoland store that I can find it at? One place i forgot to check was this huge nursery, they're the guys that supply the Chicago Botanical Gardens and that include aquatic plants. I've been there many time before but I cant seem to leave with out a half dozen rare succulents, Orchids to add to my collection, and god forbid i see a big beautiful Desert Rose, that'll come home with me too lol. But they're out there as well, a good 40 minute drive to the north shore area.

I dont have paypall but i'd be more than happy to send ya a check, or cash rolled up in sheets of paper to make it look like a letter (it works lol) or if in chicagoland I'm up for a drive (if its a warm day i'm definatly up for a ride since i'll just make it a day out on the motorcycle =)

any help would be great. maybe i'm just not seeing a very simple solution

I've tried ebay and various places. I ended up paying $4 for a ball from a member of a forum. :)

So far...it's working nicely. I have the ball in a 5 gallon "plant" tank. The tank has taken on a life of it's own really. But, I don't do much to it, except pull plants out when they get big enough. I'll have to check and see how the moss is doing. If it's growing well, I may be able to part with some. But, I'm not sure at this point.

Yea, honestly I havent tried ebay just because i've had some issues with buying stuff on it before. I know its not the norm but when you get screwed you tend to not trust something too much afterwards.

I'm surprised at how hard its been to find a pet shop thats not part of some huge chain where they all sell the same stuff, regardless of location. I remember going to that privately owned shop the other day and seeing so many different brands of foods and medicines and just a lot of cool/unique things that I never find in chain stores. The owner said that he carries all of the high end brands of foods and supplies and a lot of them I never heard of, and mostly because these chains only sell what they can get their hands on for the cheapest price and turn around for the most profit.

Oh well, i'll keep looking for now. The plants that I did buy yesterday all seem to be well, one has lots of little young sprouts coming off the bundle, my betta's just love the party cups that the plants are planted in. The cups are half filled with gravel to hold the plants down and now i've noticed the bettas love laying around in the cups, it looks like they're lounging in the sun

I could send you some moss. I do have snails in my tank, though. But if you don't mind some tag alongs, then I would sell you a small baggie full for $6 shipped.

wait, are you looking for java fern or java moss? in either case, you really can just get a few pinches of it and within 6 months have it coming out of your ears. but neither one should be "planted" in anything. for the best results, take a bit of dental floss or a very small rubber band and attach the bulk of the plant to some driftwood or other porous surface.

next time you have trouble finding a fishy thing, try looking on www.aquabid.com
