So this morning one of my Gouramis had poo hanging from what I can only describe as looking like a very very fine piece of string (you could barely see it). Is this what people mean what they say "stringy poo"?

Does anyone know what all the possible causes are?

Stringy poo can be constipation, parasites or internal bacterial infection
Only chance of parasites is if there's been a new fish added in the last month
Bacterial infections would show other symptoms, most likely the fish not eating

It's probably just constipation, so try feeding the fish some greens like a boiled, shelled pea or some algae wafer

how can it be constipation if there is poop, constipation means you cant poop.

stringy poop is nothing more than over feeding. feed a lot less and feed every other day.

Thanks guys. I've only had them a week so I guess they ARE the new fish added to the aquarium lol. I feel mean not feeding them. They only get fed once a day anyway and I only give them a tiny pinch. To be honest I was worried I was feeding them too little. I won't feed them today then. They've had peas twice, they love them! :)

How are they doing today gal ???

Not to hijack, but.... I have a similar problem with my Dwarf Cobalt Blue Gourami. I added 2 pepper cories and a plec and three days later, one of my gouramis has isolated himself, has stringy poop, but still seems to eat ok. Could this be a parasite? The cories and plec are all fine and so are the rest of the fish in the tank, including the other gouramis.

I'm not able to help but my 4 danios all have stringy poo and have done since they ame from the LFS about 3 weeks ago now. Its dark black in colour. Im feeding them on fish flakes and red blood worms once a day, not both together but alternate days. Im intrested in this too. Im currently treating them with melafix for a torn fin so not not know if i can treat for something else at same time.
