I picked up a rescue syno in lovely condition on Sunday. He had quite a long journey home involving tube, train and car. I got him home in about 2 hours but he was stressed from the journey.
Having had plenty of success having synos join the group in my 100g previously I added him to the tank after acclimatising. About an hour later I saw him sitting near the front glass still looking miserable. Apparently one of the group had taken a serious dislike to him and attacked him. :(
Naturally I removed him into my 44g with the placid crew (where I'd put another syno of a very different breed) to let him chill. Then I managed to see the damage the others had caused. Poor fella had cuts on his head and his top fin had a small amount of fraying along the top. :-( Being that the tank was already being treated with melafix and pimafix I did not immediately add more meds as I considered this likely to be detrimental. I turned off the light and let him rest. He got through the night happily and seemed alot better yesterday although the cuts were still there they didn't look serious.
This morning however his head was looking red raw, like he'd tried to get in something too small and scraped off the top layer of skin. The bites had fungus and he was miserable. :-( Did a small water change today and continued melafix/pimafix treatment. Wondered if my best action is to do small changes every day and add the meds with the change or if something stronger is warranted? :/
Hugs,
P.

I would definately say something stronger is in order. Why were you using melafix and primafix in the first place? Is it possible that the initial illness has now infected him?

Since the fuzz started growing on the open sores, it is tough to tell if it is true fungus or columnaris.

Regardles, i would start him with antibiotics, and slowly increase the temperature, as that will help increase the effectiveness of the antiotics.

The melafix and pimafix are about the only thing that's been helping one of my betta girls in the tank with a complaint she has. It's taking quite some while to clear typically. It's not a fungal disease that she has and it's not making her ill in any way so far. In fact she's slowly getting better, so long as I keep up her treatment.
I haven't managed to get a good look at the syno so far this morning so don't know how he is as yet. Those in the 100g are being quite aggressive presently which makes me think the girls are gravid. And the boys are getting into tiffs with each other. Two of them are at it now. :X Even the malawis are keeping out of the way! Neither has been injured by this sparring but I'm keeping it all under very close observation in case I need to put a stop to it quick.
As for the ill guy, I'm thinking it's more likely to be a fungal infection as opposed to anything internal since it is confined to the bites and has not spread. I will get a large water change done on the tank and use an anti-fungal med for it and see how he goes.
Fish eh.
