Stress Zyme

Hi all, i was wondering what you folks think of using stress zyme whilst doing a cycle 'fish in'?GRJ :good:
Is it just a supposed de-stresser?
If so it isn't going to do much at all, SeaChem prime however.......

In my opinion, as well as most other members, Stress Zyme, Cycle and other bacteria in a bottle products are totally useless. I have tried it on a cycling tank before and couldn't tell that it did anything at all. If you are cycling with fish, the best thing is frequent water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down to .25ppm or below.

Thats what i am currently doing, i have been doing daily water changes of between 20% and 50%to keep levels of ammonia at 0.25 and i am still waitig for nitrite to show up. I have had readings for ammonia for around 10 days, but no nitrite. Is it normal to take this long?GRJ :good:

if you want a decent product (although it doesn't work for everyone) use biospira (US) or bactinettes (UK), but don't skimp on water changes.

it can take that long yes- fishless cycling is more effective timewise, as there is a larger 'bioload' so to speak caused by pure ammonia. But please don't add anymore fish to your tank

Also I find Biozyme to be a poor mans bacterial suppliment. It comes in a very small yellow container and is a moisturized sandy consistency that smells very sweet and with an after smell of old socks. This stuff works, I can tell you from expericne, but I've never seen bio-spira or bactinettes so I can't compare it to them.

Bio-spira is almost never carried by chain pet stores because it's an expensive product that requires refrigerated shipping/storage, and doesn't have a long shelf life.

I cannot seem to get bactinettes or bio spira or biozyme here in the UK. I have got some Stress Zyme by API and have used some of that. I will post again if i get any sort of results from using it. Thanks everyone for the advice though. :good: GRJ

You could always ask your LFS if they can spare a little filter media from one of their tanks. Doesn't need to be a lot - just enough to give your filter a kick start.

has anyone heard of dired freezed bacteria to cycle your tank? Its priced at £10 and i bought it thinking it sounded as it it will work, havent had it through the post yet!

From all that I have read, it is my understanding that nitrifying bacteria can not survive in a dried state. That is why they begin to die off once your filter stops and gets dry. If that is the case then freeze dried bacteria would be useless.
