Hi

Just a quickie - I'm about to do my first partial water change about 10% on a cycling tank (with 5 guppies). I added stress coat as a dechlorinator when the tank was first filled. When I do this water change, do I need to add enough Stress Coat for the whole tank or just enough for the water I'm replacing?

Sorry, I know it probably sounds really stupid but I don't want to make a mistake that could harm the fish.

Thanks
Jue

edited to say: it's a 40 litre tank - instructions on stress coat bottle say to use 5ml per 38l when performing water change

You add enough for the water you add back in (usually just add it to the bucket before putting it in the tank). I never measure it anymore. I just squirt it in. You would have to add an extremely large amount to actually overdose (actually, an email that one member got said that it was impossible to OD a tank). I also use Stress Coat. It seems to be the most common one used by members here.

Thanks rdd. Crikey I'm starting to get paranoid :hyper:

I'm just so annoyed with my lfs for telling me to put the guppies in there and that they were "disposable suicide" fish that I'm going to do my damndest to make sure they don't die, hence all the questions :)

It's hard to find a good fish store, especially if it's a chain petstore. Even the fish stores seem to give out a lot of bad advice too. I guess they want to sell more fish and if yours die, they can. The most frustrating thing to having fish is that once you get your tank cycled and get it stocked, you can't buy any more fish :( unless you get another tank. :D

Don't even go there! I popped out to do a "bit" of shopping on New Years Eve and came back with a 180L for myself. Late Christmas Present ;) well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. At least I know how to do a fishless cycle now and can sort this one out properly.

The lfs is part of a garden centre and tbh the fish all appear to be well looked after. Spotlessly clean tanks, no dead fish in the water, all look healthy but the advice they have given me has certainly not been as it should be. I think I can use them safely for any hardware and fish supplies but just not ask for advice re setting up and which fish are suitable - 1 betta, handful of guppies and a gold nugget plec that could potentially grow to 15 inches for the 40L :grr:
