I went to my local MH Aquatics this evening to buy a male bristlenose to go with my female. We spent a good 10 mins walking round all the tanks until we found a nice one, he had great colouration and bristles and was about the same size as my female. Great I thought until I asked the assistant for him:

"Oh no I can't sell you that one, he's in there to clean the tanks. I can only sell you one out of these tanks down here" he says pointing at the juvenile bn's they had in stock. I explained that I needed a male so he said if you buy a few one of them might be!

I was so disgusted I left straight away. I can't understand the logic, nearly all of their 100+ tanks have one of 2 bn's in, some of which are really nice fish.

You gotta be persistant; ask for the manager(s) and tell em you'll no longer do bussiness with them if they dont quit being dumb and sell you the fish. Thats how i ended up with 3 cases of Doritos. :good:

being new to the hobby ive done my research first my lfs has a lot of stock and good prices but its let down by the staff's half ar$ed efforts if you know what ya want all well and good

off to find a better shop me thinks

edit. the local pets at home isnt good either only tank thay had in stock was in beech and the only stand was in black ash there fish are pricey too

i had a issue with one of my lfs till they got to know me and a mate started working there, i went in to buy a beautiful pidgeon blood dicus i was told by staff that this was not for sale as it was for a staff member but was not marked on the tank as sold then they tried telling a blue turk was a solid blue and asked if i wanted the others i got cranky and walked out i was dombfounded that they couldnt even get the names of the fish right let alone put sold on the tank beside the pidgeon blood

That is very stupid. What do they care if you take the nice one, there only using them for algae purposes. To me they are idiots... you should have spoke to the manager. I would of told the guyoff saying why would i buy a couple when i need one and why would you care which one i would take.

This is why assault is outlawed :) . Some (not all) lfs employees will try to pull a fast one on a great deal of customers, unfortunately some people do not have time to go to different stores so they just give in.

yea, i wanted some feeder fish at one place (like u can get a million for a couple dollars) and the guy is like.. why dont you get these worms instead.. they are better.. and it was for fish.. and i wanted something for my turtle.. and it was like a million dollars~

and they over priced my pretty discus :(

alot of places are like that, we would always go to the one place but as soon as we stoped buying from them we got shunted, we go to a few places now but mainly buy form the one, the guy there knows his stuff, and we get great deals, and no matter how many sustomers are there we get a full convosation and hows the fish goin etc, always remembers what we have, and he always makes sure he makes it around to other customers aswell, you can real tell he and his employees have the same passion for fish, and thats what you realy need in an aquarium, the knowledge and the passion!

The kid went off to check with the manager so I dunno what they're playing at.

We've been going there for months and I thought they had got to the point where they at least recognised us, given that we pop in nearly every week for a browse. Time to find somewhere else I think.

its pathetic how absurd some lfs staff can be
would it it be so hard to mark the tank to show fish arent for sale, my lfs uses non-permanet marker on the glass itself for whats what and the price

xXx

mine too, but sometimes it hard to read, some people walked in while i was in and said a goldfish was 15p, so i went and looked myself and it did saay 15p but the guy who worked there walked up and changed it to a 9 cos it had rubbed off

I hate that, Pets At Home, Closest decent LFS to me does this. You see a great looking fish, Go to ask for help buying it and they tell you they arn't for sale, "Display purposes only"

Whats the point in displaying fish like that if they don't sell them.... Seems pointless to me.
