Well you see its like this, one of the tank had got a snail infestation.  To try and get rid of them for good I stripped down the cleaned it, cleaned the filter, put new substrate and new plants which had been from a snail free tank.  Hay presto job done no more snails, me thinks!

Then you guested it a few months later there back.  Just a few, keep picking but them out but its just not ending.

Looking for ways to get rid without killing off my big apple snail, a mate of mine said turn the heat up a bit, it stops them breeding!  So I gave that ago.  Didn't really make any difference at all.

But now I've changed the my tanks on to RO water and most days there's a load of snails floating on the top.  I'm not sure if this is just a coincidence or what.  The fish seem to be fine.

Does anyone have any idea's whats happening?  And will the fish and the Apple snail still be ok?

Pure RO (TDS 0) is not good for snails or fish for that matter as it has had everything stripped from it, snails need calcium and minerals to build their shells, fish need some too if you are not running it through resin to get it to 0 then you may be ok but I would do half tap and half RO, what fish do you keep? as for the snails maybe get a snail trap? put some lettuce in it and you will catch more, an explosion of snails is usually down to overfeeding, do you know what type of snail they are? not all snails are bad

put a pic up if you are not sure.

I should have said the RO water is re-mineralised with "Tropic Marin re-mineral tropic".  So it should be good for minerals and what have you.  As for the fish there's about 40 Chili Rasbora and a Bristle nose, they all seem to be doing well.  I also have a nano tank with 11 Sulawesi and a few Endlers and there all doing well to.  In fact all four of my tanks seem to be doing just fine.  It's just the pest snails that are going which suits me fine, as long as it stays that way.

Oh I think there just your average pond type snail.

Ha! Mass snail suicide.... Loved the title I just had to comment!

Well, be thankful. Except check for copper in anything, copper kills inverts :)

To kil them, put a peice of lettuce weighed down with a rock in a jar, when covered, remove your apple snail if he is in there and dump the jar out. Bye bye snails! Do this once a week, 3-4 times on that day :)

I don't think copper should be an issue as I've got shrimp in two of my other tanks, how do you check for copper?

I'll give the lettuce leaf in a jar thing ago.
