I noticed my Jewel were doing strange things. I watched them and saw that one was laying eggs. As she layed the eggs, my other Jewel, Which i thought to be male, would eat them. The female was getting really frustrated about this and kept tail slapping the other.

As my jewels have layed about 6 times, but have never had fry, i'm am now thinking that i have got two females.

I have noticed that they have been fighting as one has got a nipped fin and they both have swollen lips.. persumable from jaw locking.

Does this sound like they are both females?
I am going to take one back and try and swap it for a good male.

I will advise you again, take one back, and get a Jewel that has theese characteristics:
Deep Red
Higher Fourhead
more speckles on it
longer fins

If it has all four of theese characteristics, or something in your head is screaming " ITS A MALE!" then its a male.

Laying on a different rock has nothing to do with it. Some times females pair up ( most often in convicts) and lay eggs.
