Before i went on holiday i filled my tank with the substrate, water and got the filter running. I returned today to find i very wierd, grey goo that had developed on the wood. A film of oily substance has also developed on the surface of the water. Any idea what these are?

The goo on your wood is a mould and by all accounts seems fairly harmless. If you can you should always try to boil the wood for 15 minutes before putting it in your tank. This should get rid of any mould problems.

The film on your surface is most likely a bacterial film. Place a spread out paper towel on the surface to remove or create some surface agitation. Will most likely disappear in time.
