Hi

Well a few questions in one really. I have a Juwel 125 ltr tank and have had the tank setup since 18/9/05. I currently have 6 Neon Tetra's, 2 Red Tailed Guppies and 1 Albino Pleco. I have been monitoring the status of the water etc and tonight obtained these readings

Ph 7.5
High Range seemed to show 8.4
Nitrate 10 Mg/l
Amonia betwen 0 and 0.25 mg/l

So a little conerned with the Ph and will try and sort that tommorrow as well as maybe a 20% water change.

On the fish side I've noticed a little White dot on the rear of one of the Tetra's and wonder if it was from the Pleco who was added last Weekend while the other fish added on the 1/10/05. Is this White Spot disease ? Can it be treated ?

Also I've noticed that there are a few bunches of what I believe are egss around the tank. These clumps maybe contain around 10-20 eggs. Are these fish eggs or are they snails as I have been removing a few snails over the last few days ! The 2 guppies seem to swim around together alot so wondered if they have been mating ? What do I do next ?

I apologise for the large number of questions but would welcome any response to these.

Thanks

Kevin

Do you have a nitrite reading, the ammonia reading should be 0 so it saying that your tank is still cycling, don't touch the ph as if the tank is still cycling the ph will be unstable, whitespot look like grains of salt on the fish, the eggs what colour are they, probably are snail eggs more than likely.

The Nitrite reading was 0.25 mg/l taken 2 days ago. The eggs are clear although some seem to have a slighlty Blue hue. I'm a little concerned about the ph though. Aren't these readings too high for Tetra's/Guppies etc ? Should I not reduce it a little ?

Thansk again

Kevin

None of those fish are a cycling fish, you have a nitrite reading so tank isn't cycled your ph will be unstable, what is your tap water ph, that will tell you your tank ph, as for the eggs don't no but someone will soon tell you.

OK are you saying that I shouldn't have started with Tetras and Guppes ? If so what fish should I add to get the cycle started ? Yes I guess it's still early and I haven't seen the Ammonia level rise and drop ! So what should I be doing ? I guess I'm now worried in case the Ammonia rises and kills off the fish.

Questions and more questions .... Sorry !

Your guppies are livebearers so they are not likely to have produced the eggs. More likely the snails.

The best way to keep the ammonia and nitrites under control is by frequent small water changes, don't forget to dechlorinate the new water.

I think this may be a misread of the test kit. Your test kit will likely have two different pH scales-- one for low range pH, one for high range. To read your pH correctly, measure the water using the low-range solution or strip. If it registers a value, that's your pH. If it registers at the highest value (or off the scale) it is likely that the pH of the water is above the measurable range for the low-range solution. In that case, you would use the high-range solution; the resulting value would be your pH. HTH and isn't too confusing~
