I've searched the forums and there are several threads about this fuzz being on decorations that are inorganinc, but most seem to not have an answer. So, I'm going to ask this myself. I rescaped my tank a week ago and added a new rock. This morning I woke up and was watching my fish when I realised there was this strange white film/fuzz on part of the new rock. It's translucent white and basically looks like an old cobweb and I don't think it's malign...but I still want to know what it is. It doesn't fit any of the descriptions for algaes that I might find in a tank... I suppose it could be a fungus of some sort? Will it clear up eventually?

This is a newish tank and is still in the cycling process and I've heard that these kinds of growths are natural, but I just want to make sure it will actually clear up and not be anything hazardous.

Sounds like fungus, although ive never seen it on rocks before only on wood

I've got this stuff in my triops tank, because triops create ALOT of waste(and they are sold in 2liter tanks ) even too much for a 3.5gal with a filter (albeit the worst 'filter' ever) that has mature media in it. Its all over the rock and the filter. Im pretty sur eits just bacteria though, if the tank had proper lighting i'm sure i would be seeing algae instead of this stuff.

Hmm... My fish (singular) isn't particularly messy, but it's possible some bit of food could have fallen down near the rock or something. You think it's just part of a bacterial bloom? It does happen to be where most of the moss ball chunks are and some debris in the algae could be food or waste... Thanks for the replies so far.

By the way, the triops are cute. =)
