Folks,
My big female halfbeak seems to be having a difficult time with this batch of fry. I noticed a strange growth emerging from her vent about an hour ago, and after hanging there for a while (see picture), it fell off. Apparently before this thing appeared, she produced at least one dead fry.
I have collected the "growth" and it looks like a 5 mm blob of slightly rotten fish meat. Mostly grey, some silvery spots, and a bit of red.
She's still swollen, so there may be other babies in there. She has miscarried one or two fry in a batch but then produced a bunch of healthy fry a day or two later.
As far as I can tell she's otherwise fine, and though not as greedy as sometimes, she's still eating and swimming about. One odd thing is she is breathing very heavily, as if straining or tired.
Any ideas?
Neale
