Strange Babies

Hey, I have a 335 litre tank where I have cribs, keyholes, a jack dempsey, mackerel barbs, a snail, a golden nugget pleco (Dyson) and a clown pleco (Graham). Trouble started when Graham got popeye so I bought a seperate 15 litre hospital tank to nurse him back to health. A couple of days later I noticed some babies in Graham's tank. Dyson and Graham have gotten along fine, which makes me think that there is a slim chance that they have had babies. I then spoke to Maidenhead Aquatics (a popular fish retailer) hoping for light on the situation, and the manager said that there is hardly any possibility of that happening as Clown Plecs and Golden Nugget Plecs are different species. This still leaves me puzzled so I thought I'd ask a forum. I've had baby cribs in my tank before and my keyhole is pregnant, but these babies don't look like those fish and I doubt they would have been picked up by the net when I transferred Graham into the other tank. Thanks for the help!

I always find it strange when I hear of places near me, small world it is lol.

Photos?

Also, what do you mean by your keyhole being pregnant? ..and the Jack Dempsey is probably going to cause problems pretty soon.

Its true there's no chance of the Clown Pleco & Golden Nugget of breeding together (especially since they weren't both present in the tank). Did you put any plants/wood/gravel/sand etc in the hospital tank moved from the main one?

I would love to put some pictures up, only my good camera has run out of battery and I can't find the charger. I tried using my phone camera but the babies are too small so they're out of focus.

The keyhole cichlid is pregnant so she could have had the babies without me noticing and when I transferred my clown plec they got transferred as well. But it seems she's still pregnant, and as I said, I think the holes in the net are too big for them to get caught in it.

About the Jack Dempsey- he's fine in my tank, I know it should cause a lot of problems but there has been nothing so far, only with fish larger than him (had him and an african bush fish and the bush fish unfortunately met its end). In fact, for some time (when the cribs were having babies) he got bullied by the cribs and a few of the babies have even survived! So small fish are fine as he doesn't see them as a threat.

Nope! Everything in the hospital tank is brand new, sand, plants etc...

I know it sounds like a stupid question, but since they are so small are you positive they are fish fry, like Daphnia or something? Some fish have been known to hitch rides to new tanks via laying eggs on plants etc.

Definately not daphnia or any sort of live food. And it is unlikely that they're from the plants to be honest because they've been sat in the plant cascade at work for months and most likely would have hatch by now. Thanks anyway though.

One time I bought some plants at my LFS to find that a few fry got scooped into the bag with the plants I bought. Any chance of that?

without a picture its impossible to say.

Ps you keyhole will not be pregnant she will be eggy ;) they lay eggs i believe so unless you have a pair no chance of fry from her

Not really because I bought the plants pretty much dry. And when they were in the water it would not have been a happy environment for a fish.

I guess you'll find out when they grow up, then.
