a bit of help needed on stocking please. my tank is 42 inches long, the height is 18 inches and the depth is 15 inches. its been housing guppies and swordtails for months but i'm really quite fond of cichlids. really like labeotropheus trewavassae (sorry it don't say its common name in the book i've seen a photo of it in) and was kinda wondering if them and the lemon cichlid would live happily together? i also like rams and the blue zebra cichlid. thanks.

The lemon cichlid (Neolamprologus leleupi), the Trewavas' Cichlid (Labeotropheus trewavasae and the blue zebra cichlid (Pseudotropheus Zebra) are all rift valley cichlids from Lake Malawi.

They are all rather aggressive (so your swords and platies would have to be rehomed) and need to be overstocked to reduce aggression between themselves, so you need good filtration. They also need very hard, alkaline water and are a fish for a specialist set up; you cannot mix them with other types of tropical fish (with a very few exceptions; there's a species of Synodontis that comes from Lake Malawi, for instance).

Rams come from South America, are quite peaceful and need soft, acid waters, so you have to decide which route you want to go down; African or South American; you could not have any combination of the two in one tank!

yeah my tank has a very good filter on it. its an old fluval filter. got a under gravel filter to put in it too but its got coral sand in it so not sure it would work too well. the coral sand was bought to raise the alkaline level with a view to getting trewavas and lemon cichlids. quite like the njassae. yeah it'll only be a cichlid tank i've seen what happens with rams and guppy fry before.
