Hello. I would like to start off by saying that this forum is the best that I have found! The information that I have found on this website has been great and the members are always ready to offer advice to newcomers. I've learned so much already, but I have been reading and researching all of the different types of tropical fish available and the number of choices is just astounding. I am new to fishkeeping and I want to make sure that I get the right type of fish for both the size of my aquarium and my water quality.

Right now I have a 48l x 12w x 20h inch aquarium (roughly 50g) with 2 Penguin 330 filters, my tap water shows 10 KH and 16 GH with a PH of 7.6.

After I do a fishless cycle I would really like to start a community freshwater tank. I would like to use some of the following fish, can anyone tell me which would work best with my water quality? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance & keep up the great work.

rainbowfish (boeseman & lake kutubu)
giant & pearl danios
black skirt and head & tail light tetras
cherry barbs
platies
corydoras
bristlenose pleco

I think all of them will be fine. Most tropical fish prefer slightly softer more acidic water but the majority of fish will do fine in your water and I have kept healthy fish in similar water for a good few years.

I'm not sure about the Rainbow fish as I have never kept any but the danios, tetras, barbs, cory's and bristlenose plec are all fine. Platies will be fine too but I have never kept them either so will let someone else confirm.

With the tetras, cory's, Danios and barbs at least make sure you get a good shoal of them. Looks like a good list of hardy fish to get started with and they are all quite nice and interesting too.
