Hello,

I have just won an auction on a brand new Jewel Rekord 96 which I will be collecting tomorrow. I come here asking for inspiration, I know 20 UK gallons isn’t a lot to play with but I’m at Uni and don’t have that much room for anything bigger.

I already have a similar setup which has been running for over a year without too many problems which is a mixed community and I’m looking for something a bit different.

Ideally I would like something I could breed in there. I have already successfully bred Siamese fighters and kribs and it's something I enjoy.

The tank as I mentioned is a jewel rekord 96 and from looking around on the net the dimensions are 81L x 46H x 36W cm which is 96 litres or about 21 UK gallons. It’s brand new so it has all the standard lighting and inbuilt filter.

I would love to keep discus but as far as I understand this tank is not big enough for a pair in a long term setting. Whatever I choose it will need to be happy in a 20g for life as I don’t know if I’ll have room to get a bigger aquarium later or not. None of my local fish shops sell RO and as I am in a shared house I don’t think the other guys would be too happy if I got an RO unit as they waste so much water.

A nano reef is very tempting but all my experience has been with freshwater and to be honest I don’t really have the money to buy all the expensive equipment involved with keeping a reef.

As for upgrades to the tank I am tempted with a fluval 304 or such, I have one on my currently 20g and it’s served me very well. I am pretty handy with diy (I am doing an engineering degree so I should be) so I don’t mind doing the odd mod or two.

I live in Bradford at the mo and QSS aquatics is my lfs, they have some lovely fish and have always been helpful, they say they will order fish in for me, if they are unable to source them then I may need to order from an online retailer which I haven’t done before.

I know I’m asking a lot but hopefully someone will be able to help me,

Thanks in advance, Tom

If you dont want to go with the old faithful livebearers then maybe a pair of rams
You can have a look at the pinned articles at the top of the new world cichlid section and it may give you some ideas.

20gal is not much to work with but Endlers are a pretty but small fish that will give you a good amount of fry. Try the livebearer forum for more info on Endlers livebearers.
