Hi all,

currently cycling my Rio 400 no established media unfortunately (so gopletny time to decide ) and definately want at least one oscar in there but not sure what to go with it. Not sure if want 2 O's or just the 1 with a couple mates. Remember yrs ago my dad had an O with a couple angelfish and a very large plec.

I know O's vary in personality from fish to fish so some will get on with other fish some dont. Anyone had experience with Angels and O's together. Also red spotted severum caught my eye too.

Tank running Fluval 405 filters

some advice would be great.

Hey, a rio 400 is about 105USG which gives you quite a bit of room to play with.

2 Oscars may work but there is a very big risk of aggression between them once they mature,

Angels with Oscars is also Very risky IMO and depends totally on the specific Oscar you buy, I have seen them together before but I wouldn't personally risk it, If an Oscar was to turn on an Angelfish the Angel would have no chance.

An Oscar and a Severum should be ok, as would an O and a Jack Dempsey or an O and a Firemouth.

I would personally go with 2 cichlids and then a shoal of dithers such as Silver Dollars or Tinfoils, then either a bichir or Pleco and possilby a few clown loach or hoplos or similar.

how many Silver dollars would you suggest with 1 oscar and a severum then. dont think i could watch angels getting destroyed by an O my dad was very lucky.

I would go for around 5 SD's, add these first along with any other bottom feeders and allow them a few weeks to get settled in before you buy the Severum and Oscar,
Also make sure the SDs are a good size as the oscar will quickly outgrow them and may see them as food if they are not big enough

would a Red Tail Black Shark be pushing luck i know they can be agressive but with a couple oscars thats not a bad thing

ok been thinking about this alot more since my cycle has reached stage 2.

instead of the RTBS i was thinking about clown loaches.

1/2Oscars
5 Silver Dollars
2/3 Clown Loaches
1 Plec

Hi
Again with clown loaches make sure they are a good size before you add the Oscars, Oscars will very quickly outgrow most other species.
I would also be going for a bare minimum of 3, although TBH 5-6 would be better.

if you do decide to go down the route of having 2 Oscar be prepared to move 1 in around 6-8 months if things don't work out once they mature.

Would my tank be able to hold 5 Clowns with the stocking i suggested?
