A coupe large schools of tetras, a big group of cories and some angels/gouramis would be nice. Remember though, if you go with pictus cats stay away from small fish (under 3" I think?) because if it fits in their mouth they'll eat them!

so will a goat...

just thought i would say that... >_>

i would like to have a school tank if i had the money. like tetras or something. they always looked cool on tv on science of the deep... >_>

If it were me, I would do either freshwater "oddballs" or saltwater (definetly leaning toward the saltwater). A 55 gallon tank is a decent size for a reef; and as much as I like freshwater fish, the marine side of the hobby kicks the hell out of freshwater as far as variety, colour and personality goes. Triggers and Groupers put Cichlids to shame as far as "personality" goes; the many small species of saltwater Goby, Anthias, Cardinals and Dartfish make freshwater Gobies, Tetras, Gouramis and others look like grey blobs; and Corals alone are like a whole other dimension to the hobby with their multitudes of body plans, colours and colony designs. Like I said before, as much as I like Freshwater fish, they just can't compare. Though freshwater's "oddballs" are a little easier to both obtain and care for, generally. Your choice, really; you have my (opinionated) comparison. :shout:

Your looking at spending lots of $$$ if you go for a reef tank. I'd get come convicts and pictus catfish for it.

Pictus Catfish get big though, I read they get up to 11 and a half inches long.

By all means get a couple sets of tetras and a few angels and some type of catfish that won't eat the tetras. If you get sand cories are an excellent addition. :good:

I've had my 55 gallon set up as saltwater before and I speak from experience when I say that saltwater, especially reef, is very expensive. You could go with fish only with some fake coral but you still can't have a lot of fish in the tank. People say it beats freshwater as far as color, etc.....but for some not being able to have many fish in the tank ruins it.

yes you are right about the pictus but their are two kinds i beleve, and one only gets about 6 inches in captivity.

i was not thinking of going to a reef tank nore saltwater becuase they are much to expensive, and i yet do not have the experience needed to keep a reff / saltwater tank going.

and convicts can be agressive towards other fish can they not?

i like the idea of tetras and angel fish.

Well actually, I'm a 15 year old kid with a sporadic job, and I've managed to keep a saltwater tank going for a year and a half, and am now setting up a large (200 gallon) system. A fish only saltwater is actually not much more expensive than a freshwater tank when common sense is used when purchasing equipment; nor is it more difficult to keep (easier in fact). But, if you don't want to do it, don't; all the more Triggers for me. :hey:

P.S.
Saltwater fish can, with caution, be stocked to levels equaling that of a freshwater tank. Once again though, it does take common sense. :shout:
