standard 55 gallon tank

1 jack dempsey
pair of firemouths
12 tiger barbs


they'll all be juveniles when i buy them. will aggression be likely in a tank like this or is it a pretty safe bet?

Sounds fairly reasonable.

The main issue might be aggression between the two firemouths if you happen to get two males.

You might also find that 12 TB's is a bit too many for a 55G (in terms of visually "taking over" the tank. That wouldn't be a problem though, as you could always rehome a couple if you wanted to thin them out a bit.
