Stocking, But Not With The Normal Types Of Fish

hey so im thinking of getting a 14 gallon tank and i was wondering what i could put in it beside the old plattys, guppies, tetra, cory,and on and on

i have a five gallon tank now so i would be moving my 2 guppies and 1 molly already into this new tank
but are there any other uncommon fish , maybe a peacefull cichlid or something i could add in?
i like hachetfish and puffers, but i believe those are known to be fin nippers
could i possibly add a male betta? the tank will be hevily planted so there would be hiding places
what other types of fish do you recomend, im open to anything

Some of the dwarf cichlids such as apistos would be suitable. Once the tank matures a few ottos, which are a bit sensitive but are excellent at eating algae would work well.

I wouldn't put the male (or female either for that matter) betta in there as they will see the large fins of the guppies as another betta and attack them. As you mentioned, puffers won't work as they will attack the other fish and really need to be in a species tank (I think).

ok so no bettas or puffers, but can anyone give me some information about the cichlids i could add?
how many could i put in a 14 gallon tank?
will they work with my 2 guppies and molly?
if i add a dwarf cichlid , will it limit my choices on other fish, and if so, what type of fish would not work with them?

Although I'm certainly no expert on cichlids, I think most of them are at least somewhat territorial. I would imagine a single pair in a 14 gallon tank would be all you could have but hopefully some one will correct me if I'm wrong. As for them working with guppies and a molly, it would probably workdepending on the type cichlids you got. Most of the South American cichlids prefer slightly acidic water where mollies prefer brackish water with a higher pH. Guppies are fine in just about anything.
