i have 5 bronze cories and a male betta. the betta isnt too nippy as he only goes after the cories occasionally and playfully at feeding time. i was wondering if i could get snails and/or tetras. would this work? any other ideas??

snails can work i wouldnt suggest tetras they are nibblers and will bit his fins :(
im getting a couple of snails for mine

by the way, by tetra i mean neon/cardinal

Bettas are really not suitable in a community tank for a number of reasons:

1. Depending on their temperament they do sometimes attack to the death.
2. They are very poor swimmers and often cannot compete with smaller fish for food.
3. Their long flowing fins can get nipped by even the most docile of community fish.

I would only ever advise you keep them on their own in a minimum tank size of 5 gallons.

:good:

I agree with jonesyuk and would add that if your betta is already 'playfully going after' the corys then he'll most likely do the same to any other fish you add to the tank.

They can be stroppy monsters when they want to be (as well as being rather vulnerable themselves to fin nipping).

When I had my old tank a few years ago I bought a Betta (with neon tetras, plattys, mollys, corys and harlequins) a week later almost everything was dead... I took him straight back to the shop. Maybe I was just really unlucky!!

No, you're not alone...I had the same problem with my first ever betta. He ate the tails of 3 neons overnight so I had to move him on to a tank of his own

I haven't risked a male betta in a community tank ever since.

I had a simillar experience with bettas. I added a goldfish to a tank with a betta in it and the poor goldfish was immidiatly attacked, so I separeted them.
