(I copied this from Beginner Questions because I wasn't getting much response)

What does anyone think of this stocking arrangement? S/B approx 105" of fish.

120 Gallon Freshwater Aquarium

Boesemani Rainbow Fish 2/Female; 1 Male
Gold Veil Angel Fish 2
White Blushing Angel Fish 2
Dwarf Gourami 2
Honey Dwarf Gourami 2
Ornate Cory Cat 5
Rasbora 5
Congo Tetra 5
Rummynose Tetra 5
Platy 2
Gold Nugget Pleco 1

I am concerned that some of these species prefer slightly soft water and others medium hard. Does that mean that they will not be compatible?

Also, will the Angels eat the Rummynose Tetras? Should I try for a larger schooling fish?

Does anyone forsee any problems with this stocking arrangement? Will have plenty of plants and hiding places.

I wont comment on whether the fish will all go together because i've never kept most of the fish you mention so i wouldn't know.

But i can answer your question about the soft / hard water requirements of the fish. So long as the fish store is local to you then i wouldn't worry about the hardness or softness of the water. This only really comes into play if your trying to breed them. Otherwise it will be fine.

Not nessecarily though. I know a majority of the lfs's near me import from abroad, and abroad won't have the same water conditions as you.

The point is that if they all acclimated to the LFS tanks, which all use the same local water, they'll be fine in his.

I don't forsee any problems with those fish. The angels and rummy nose should be fine together at least for a while. Angels can only eat what they can get in their mouths. If you get all the fish small (angels an 1" or 2" long), it will be quite a while before the angels are any where near large enough to eat the rummys. Maybe in a year or so, you may (and it's only a maybe) have a problem but you will probably have a couple more tanks to move them to by then. MTS gets us all.

I like how rdd assumes you'll get another tank in a year... so true though!

I don't see any problem either, rummynose tetras grow larger then neons, which are the angels preferred snack. I think you'll be ok with this setup in a big tank like that.

If I were you though, I'd trade the gold nugget for a common. I find the common plecos much more interesting to watch, more efficient algea/leftover eaters and much more active during the day...

Good point.

I don't see a problem with the list of fish either and think the combination will look great.

How are you going to dress the tank.... plants, rocks, gravel/sand etc?

For the most part, the arrangment is fine for a community tank. My personal preference is to go with fish from a similar region. I would keep less species, but more of each, especially the small schoolers. Though they will do alright with numbers you have, a larger school of say, the Rummynose, would better show off the fish to their full potential. It also looks more impressive. But I am biased towards biotope-type aquariums.

I think we all fight that inner battle between getting 6 of 3 or 4 species of schooling fish so we have a variety in the tank or getting 20 or 25 of the same species so they have a huge school. I have seen a tank with nothing but neons in it. It was beautifully aquascaped and had probably 50 to 75 neons in it. It really looked great. Personally, I would love to have a big tank (at least 75 gallon, preferably 120+) with just angels but I don't have the room (or money or time) for another one right now. I love to watch my angels. They are so graceful.

I agree totally, that's why I offered the option of less species but more fish. Of course, we know what the solution is for that dilemma. Get more tanks! :p

Ahh, more tanks. When I hit the lottery, I'm going to have a full fish house. Tanks big enough to get any type fish I want and not have to worry about it being cramped for space. And scuba gear so I can do the cleaning. At least I can dream.

To me its kinda pointless to have 5 tetras of each species when you have ALL that room. You wouldn't be able to see them! IMO, I would get atleast 10-15 of each.
I would make sure to get both females and males (or just females) with the gouramis because if you get all males you'll have some aggression problems.
I would also get more of the cories. I think it would be way cool if you had a shoal of 20 cories!

You know, I was at the LFS today and I had decided that I would have a larger school of rummynose and not get any rasbora's. (I'm partial to Tetra's) I think these are all great suggestions and I will also consider adding more cory cats as well. The gold nugget pleco stays pretty small (6") doesn't he? Don't common pleco's get to around 18"? Aren't they very messy fish? I don't want to over load my tank with a giant pleco....Do they really suck slime coating off Discus? Should I be worried about pleco's with the Angels?

Oh, also does anyone have any suggestions on stocking order?

Platies first, and Angels, cory cats and plecos towards the end, but how sensitive are the other fish? Do I just add them very slowly 2 or 3 at a time after the tank is cycled?
