Hi all

I have my tank and it will be finished cycling soon, its a planted 60 Litre tank, more tall than wide but still good size for fish.

I have decided to get some Neon Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras and maybe a few (Galaxy Rasboras if I could get hold of them).
I'v been doing some reading and apparently these fish need a mature tank with some good bacteria which has been running quite a while, although I have also noticed people have had success with Neon Tetras in a new tank, any ideas?

I would also like one or two medium size hardy fish that are bright and would do well in the tank, (no bottom feeders please)
Maybe some

Rainbow Fish?
Platys?
Dwarf Gouramis?
Guppies?
Danios?

Thanks for any advice or stocking ideas

Rainbow Fish? need a much larger tank
Platys? ok, but best to stick to Males so that you are not overun with fry
Dwarf Gouramis? - Honey Gouramis would be more suited
Guppies? - will most likely get nipped by the neons and galaxies, again will breed like rabbits
Danios? - too active for such a small tank

Hi IP

Neons are definitely not a good idea for a new tank, in the main they have become a fairly weak species that really do need a mature tank.

I take it you have been doing a fishless cycle using ammonia?

personally I would look at a stocking similar to this

5 neons
5 Harlequins
5 Galaxy rasbora
and then either a pair of honey Gouramis or 3 Male platys ?

Yep, been doing tests on Ammonia, Ph, Gh, and Nitrate and Nitirate, all going good so far. Will be putting the fish in soon!

Ok thats great thanks for the advice,

Out of interest would the Gouramis or Platys be ok to put in from the start? maybe just one or all three?

rainbow fish needing a larger tank  ? what about preacox rainbows? they only get to 2 inches and would be well suited to your tank.

tetras will be fine, and i have found that neons dont tend to be nippy at all!!

but avoid these 3 for a new tank

rummy nose
cardinal
neon.

Not really whilst they are small, praecox are still an active fish that would be much happier in a slightly bigger tank
