Just after a few ideas for my next tank in about a year its going to be 200gallon 8" long 24" wide 24" deep i have decided against tangs and thinks its going to be a mbuna set up anyone got any ideas also how many to stock this i was thinking about 50-60 but how many species ?

Thanks

Yeah about 50 sounds good. The question is really how many species do you like the look of really? You could do 10 species 5 of each or 5 species 10 of each.

You not tempted by some of the big NW cichlids in a tank that size or something like Frontosa? Big fish for a big tank :D

You know i love Mbuna but with a tank that big i'd be very tempted by some monsters.

I`m jealous ! If I already had an Mbuna tank and I could buy and fit a 8" tank in my house somewhere I would probably go for some kind of Haps tank after seeing some in the flesh recently.

Nope, go mbuna all the way. They would be awesome in a large tank. If it were me, I'd go w/10 of five different species. They act so much different in larger groups.

I was tempted by fronts but i think a large mbuna setup would be different i have only found a couple of examples of mbuna tanks of this size , it would be interesting to see how they behave in such a large space.

but for the next 12 months its just planning building my own wet/dry sump, stand and hood, auto water changer ect.

I hear that, I would love to have a large mbuna tank like that. I'm even thinking of buying a house (live in a second floor apartment) just so I can get more tanks. MTS strikes again.

Im moving house in about 8 months hence 12 months until new tank, new house must have room for tanks maybe even a fish room !

No question a huge Mbuna tank will look stunning and you can be adventurous with your stocking as there will be plenty of space to help nullify aggression issues. :good:

I cant wait its mainly going to be wild caught 1 fish is still a must metriaclima membe deep stunning fish.

membe deep

If you do want to go with wild caught fish, you'll need to wait for your tank to mature, not just cycle. Water parameters will need to be spot on and accurately replicate Lake Malawi conditions, this is normally not so vital as most LFS Mbuna are tank bred.
