I'm thinking about getting a 60g, and I'm leaning towards NW cichlids for stocking options. I've never kept New Worlds before and really want to get this right. What would you recommend that's good for a NW beginner like me? I'm looking for a fairly hardy species, which is pretty docile.

Thanks.

docile ey?
Severums,
Festivums
Blue Acaras
Port Acaras
Pear Cichlid (Geophagus)
oscars
i'll think of more later, but the list goes on
you can choose a few out of those

Thanks DD. :)

I was thinking of severums: are they demanding? Not like I'd neglect them or something, but are they overly sensitive to fluctuations of temperature or anything?

nope, they're great like that
and if you want to add community fish, these are the cichlids
i recomend,
a catfish or two
3 clown loachs, i think they would be alright, not sure
a school of 5-10 large tetras/large danios
maybe a Festivum
and blue acara
plant it, put rocks and driftwood
and there you have an awesome community tank :)

EDIT:damn it  i put severums in there by mistake and even put plants! shows how much i know :(

If it was a 110 gallon tank I agree, but this one is only 60 gallons, and a pair of severums fills it up as far as cichlids are concerned.

The idea is there though, the pair of severums, a group of an appropriate tetra/danio/rainbowfish and a group of catfish would fill out the tank nicely.

i am getting a 60 gallon as well but i have a couple of dempseys that im putting in it !!! i think you should put convicts in it hahahahah!!!! that would really make your tank stand out!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. :) I'll probably do 2 sevs, some zebra danios or something, and some cories.

I thought about convicts, but I don't want something that agro. :D

Probably best to stay away from corys as well, go with something bigger and tougher.

Yeah, the sevs may get curious and say to themselves "I'm bored I wonder if I can fit those corys in my mouth." You may want a pleco or something a little bigger than a cory.

Okay, I'll steer clear of cories. They don't eat algae anyway. :p

I'm now thinking:

5x zebra danios
2x Sevs
1x bristlenose pl*co

How does that sound? Are these fish tough? Compatible?

It sounds good though I'd triple the school of danios, but if you find it too much, at least double them. With the sevs around they'll find comfort in numbers. 5 may get nervous where 15 wouldn't even care. Besides, shoaling fish are always cooler in shoals.
