I've recently finished cycling my new juwel rekord 800 (110litres) and as a newbie to the world of tropical fish, I'm at a loss as to what I can put in my tank! Thing is, I go into my lsf and like pretty much everything I see! So I've only got some zebra danios so far, as I've read from several sources that they're good for newbies like myself.

I'm very fond of guppies however a guy at my lsf told me that they shouldn't be with mollies, is that true?

so yeah, I thought maybe you guys could help me out with suggestions of good combinations, relatively easy fish lol :)

Hiya
It depends whether you want livebearers as they do multiply at a fast rate.

I think the guy at the lfs meant if you want to breed guppies then don't keep them with mollys as they will eat the guppy fry. There's no other reason I know of why they can't be tankmates.

A nice way of building up your fish is to buy them for different levels of the tank, for instance:

Start with a hardy fish as you have with danios, these are mid level fish, who will feed as bits of food drop and occasionally from the surface.

After 1 or 2 weeks add something like 1male and 2 female guppies which will feed greedily at the surface sending down bits of flake for the danios.

If water stats remain settled, add a few tetras ie neons, glolight or lemon to name a few.

Keep adding a few at a time until the tank is established after around 6 months.

THEN is the time to add the bottom dwellers such as corydoras, small plecos like pitbull plecs as these are the sensitive fish who will not tolerate any poor water quality.

Mmmm 110 litres! Should keep you busy choosing fish for ages. Have fun :good:

Thank you for the tips, I'll definitly keep them in mind :)

And yeah, I know its not a very big tank compared to most here but its the biggest I've ever had lol :)

Luckily for me my lsf is right opposite my sixth form so I can nip in there after college and before I go home XD gives me lots of time to stare at the pretties!

You misunderstood me, sorry, I didn't mean it was small but that 110 litres is a big starting tank. That's why I said it will keep you busy for ages.

I know, sorry I didn't mean it to sound sarcastic ^^; I meant I know its a big starting tank, but it's still small compared to some I've seen on this site, some of you have tanks that are literally thousands of litres, somehow I don't think my parents will let me get one quite that size (yet) lol :)

Mollys prefer slightly brackish water, which may be why your LFS told you they aren't compatible. For a beginner, i'd suggest platys over mollys. Guppies are a great fish for beginners. If you don't want to get overrun w/fry you might consider an all male tank. In any case, make sure you add them slowly as glolite suggested.
